The early bird

Yesterday Jacob didn't take his usual afternoon nap, and as a result by about 5pm was unbearably cranky. We put him to bed until dinner, and planned to get him up, feed him, and put him back down. But the Oscars came on, and for some reason I was watching it, and we kind of forgot about him until it seemed too late to get him up. We decided to just let him sleep, hoping he would be tired enough to keep sleeping all night... we were fools!

At about 3am, I heard him rustling around in his room. He was calling for me, but I thought maybe if I pretended I was still asleep he'd go back to sleep too. I actually did fall back asleep, not hearing much more noise. A wee bit later I was awakened by the TV, turned on at top volume. Again, I thought maybe if I ignored it he'd just fall back asleep in front of the TV. Not that he's ever done that before... I was just really freakin tired and didn't want to get up. But I couldn't sleep with the TV up that loud, so after a little while I got up and turned on a movie for him because that was way easier than trying to argue him back to bed. I went back to bed, and slept until my alarm went off at 6am. At that point, I get up and wander out to the living room to see what the J is doing. He wasn't there, but there was an ocean of Cheerios on the carpet, the couch, under the couch, on the table... they were everywhere. And the ones on the carpet were all smashed into bits, too. I found Jacob in the kitchen, eating out of the tub of Country Crock, with a knife! He's got butter all over his face, and he smiles real big and says, "Hi mama! I like butter!" You can't not laugh at that (being as he thankfully had not cut his lips off). Before he managed to get into the butter, he apparently had tried to open some yogurt and the Hershey's syrup.

So even though I was vacuuming Cheerios out of my couch cracks at 6:30am after a night when I was up three or four times with the kids (Bean just can't seem to go eight hours without eating, little fatty), I had a good laugh over the early bird. Ah, the things kids do.
