In my constant quest for cloth diaper perfection, I have tired of the little plastic pants because they make my kids smell constantly like bleach and tinkle. So I researched other cloth diaper cover options. I found these really nice covers, that looked attractive and comfortable... but were like $17 apiece -- no good when I need at least five in two different sizes. So now I know what the high roller organic moms do for their kids, but what do the real people do?
And then I came upon the Woolypants. Well, Woolypants is my name for them, but they are in fact wool diaper covers. It turns out that wool has magical properties. It is naturally waterproof-yet-absorbant, antibacterial, and temperature controlling. These hippies claimed that they never smelled bad and you only had to wash them once every couple of weeks. I was kind of skeptical about this. I mean, sure, a wool mitten might not smell too bad because you're playing in snow. But it has to smell bad if you're peeing in it... right? And every couple of weeks? Ew.
I figured it was worth a try, at any rate. So I busted out my knitting needles (yeah, that's right, I'm making them myself) and whipped up my very first pair of Woolypants. I made that sound quick. It actually took me a week. The first pair was a little small, but I put Bean in them anyway. Sure enough, they were able to absorb a fair amount before they felt damp, they didn't smell like anything but a damp mitten, and they wicked the moisture away from her bum. And, sure enough, I just let them air dry and in a couple hours they smelled just as wooly as when I got it from the store.
I'm now on my third pair and I have to say... they are so cool! I'll have to put up some pictures of my kids and their wool undies. Who knew wool was so magical? Plus, I love knitting but sometimes have a hard time finding projects. Of course, I've been at this for about a month and my fingers are now officially crippled... but still. Sa-weet!
