Halloween in Minnesota

Before I experience my first Halloween in El Paso, I'd like to take a minute to reminisce about Halloween in God's Country, also known as the great state of Minnesota. Here in Texas, we're still having 70 degree days and 40 degree nights. I'm just busting out my hoodie now, even when I don't need it (it's still my garment of choice, Dubie :) It feels like MN weather in early September, like what you might call Indian summer.

Not in MN! I've met people here who can't imagine having snow as something more than a freak occurance, people who wear flip-flops year round. But I remember Halloweens back home where my dad had to snowblow a little path across the yard so kids could cross without having to walk through the snow. Costumes in MN always had to be bought way too big, so that you could fit your winter coat under them. In MN, princesses sometimes have to wear snow boots and winter hats.

This only really applies to Halloween as kids, of course. Once we got older (sadly not wiser) we'd freeze our asses off to dress like whores, get drunk, and wander around out in the cold looking for a good party. Without snowboots. As it turns out, this is a practice not limited to God's Country. They do it here in the Seventh Circle of Hell, too. Oh well, you only have so many Halloweens to dress like a catholic schoolgirl... Bekki, do you have any pictures of that? I bet we were hot. Good times. *smirk*

Anyway, even though I have fond memories of my MN Halloweens, and as much as I wish I was home, I have to say that I will enjoy trick-or-treating with the kids and not worrying about anyone --myself included-- getting cold. Just me and my hoodie... hm, I feel another blog coming on... stay tuned for Halloween in the Desert, or possibly Hoodie Haiku.

One more note-- I am celebrating my 25th Halloween this year, and my pumpkin carving is still as godawful as it's ever been. Still, I am here to tell you I will never give up my art!!
